Sue Barker insists she did not quit A Question Of Sport and instead was “removed” from the role by the BBC’s in a major shake up of the popular quiz show. The host has been axed from the series alongside team captains Matt Dawson and Phil Tufnell – and is heartbroken over the decision. In a statement she said she would never have ‘left’ the show she’s fronted for 24 years on her own terms.

She added: “I love the show so much they would have to remove me, it would have been tough for me to walk away.

“I absolutely loved my 24 years fronting A Question Of Sport, it’s been my dream job.

“But I understand the BBC want to take the show in a new direction and I’m sad to say goodbye.”

The stars are said to have been “blind-sided” by the decision as the show remains incredible popular.

Matt Dawson wrote on Twitter: “Thanks for all the lovely messages. I’m not sure how to respond so I’ll have a think.

“Needless to say I will miss Question of Sport immensely.”

Phil Tufnell added: “13 yrs Question of Sport has been a great part of life, going to miss it hugely, thanks so much for all the lovely messages.”

The show has been a regular fixture of the BBC’s schedule, having recently celebrated its 50th anniversary.

But BBC bosses have decided the show needs a major shake up.

One wrote: “Sue Barker’s axing from A Question Of Sport is blatant ageism. No other reason for it as she is an excellent host.”

Another said: “No ageism/sexism in the BBC then …..Sue Barker leaving BBC’s A Question of Sport.”

A third posted: “BBC have done it again with the ageism especially against women. They haven’t learnt anything from last time. Remember Countryfile’s Miriam O’Reilly?”

One wasn’t convinced however, saying: “They’ve not just removed Sue Barker, they’ve removed all three, so it’s not really ageism is it… “
